Re:Uniform
@ Benton Dene Schools
ABOUT US
The Team:
We are a small group of parent volunteers from Friends of Benton Dene who normally raise funds for fun things throughout the year and across both schools, however we quickly came to realise that with the cost of school uniform and the current cost of living crisis, this project could have a bigger impact if it was able to stand alone. It would also go some way to combat the stigma and embarrassment that parents said they felt by taking 'second hand' items in front of other parents and teachers.
Our Mission:
No-one should have to make a choice between paying bills and buying school uniform. So we are doing our bit to save uniform from landfill while providing everyone with school uniform.
In the Beginning:
Recently, worn and donated items of uniform were haphazardly kept in the archive room. It is now roughly sorted, but still almost impossible to maintain as the space is not meant for this purpose and unrestricted access is inappropriate.
There have been attempts for each school zone to manage their own colours of clothing by wheeling out rails of uniform one day a week at the classroom exit, but this was too dependent on teacher’s time and the weather conditions at pick up time.
The Good News!
Thanks to a successful bid, this September 2022, The National Lottery Community Fund agreed to fund our project's start up costs which means that ReUniform@BentonDene can take care of the storage and maintenance of all donated items of pre-worn school wear by having a dedicated space outside the school building beside the bike shed. We will have our very own little building and be able to help more people more efficiently.
